Russia launched more than 280 drones and 16 ballistic missiles against Ukraine overnight on October 27, injuring at least 15 people in Kyiv and striking several regions across the country. According to The Guardian, the attacks coincided with the beginning of a limited ceasefire between Moscow and Kyiv in the Russian-occupied town of Oleshky. The local agreement is intended to facilitate humanitarian operations and assistance to civilians facing increasingly difficult conditions. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused Russia of targeting energy facilities, transportation networks and civilian infrastructure. He also criticised prolonged delays in deliveries of interceptor missiles for Patriot and NASAMS air defence systems, arguing that these shortages weaken Ukraine's defensive capabilities. Continued fighting elsewhere demonstrates that the Oleshky arrangement remains strictly local rather than a broader cessation of hostilities. The escalation raises further questions about prospects for meaningful peace negotiations./ The Guardian
