Tech giants, international financial institutions, and Western defense industries have become the primary pillars sustaining Israel’s war machine in Gaza.
According to Diplomacy Atlas, an opinion piece titled "Three Years of War in Gaza: How Systematic Killing Served Western Capitalism" by Toufic Haddad has been published in The New Arab. Examining the deep ties between major technology firms, financial markets, and defense industries, this article analyzes how Western capitalism profits from the continuation of the Gaza war and Washington’s structural support for it. Below is a summary of the piece.
Three years after the onset of devastating attacks on the Gaza Strip and early warnings from scholars regarding genocide, Israel’s political and military structures remain intent on completing the process of ethnic cleansing in the enclave. The continuation of daily Palestinian casualties demonstrates that ceasefire agreements have not been honored in practice, and the United States recently replenished the core arsenal of this military campaign by supplying 40,000 two-ton bombs. This trajectory proves that the forces driving and shielding this war remain active, using the passage of time to consolidate their position.
Beyond the military and diplomatic backing of Western governments, a network of major technology corporations and global financial institutions has played a decisive role in sustaining and directing this war machine. Tech giants such as Microsoft, Google, and Amazon have provided cloud computing services to the Israeli government and its core defense industries, supplying the infrastructure needed to process audio and visual data and compile target lists for assassinations and bombings. Covert mechanisms were even deployed within companies like Google and Amazon to tip off Israeli counterparts whenever foreign courts requested access to data stored on their servers.
At a deeper level, Western financial capitalism has distributed the profits of this war across the global economy. Asset management and investment giants hold substantial stakes in major tech firms and nearly all profitable sectors of the S&P 500 index. Index funds channel profits from military and security contracts linked to the Gaza war into public and private pension funds across Western nations, inadvertently turning ordinary Western workers and citizens into financial beneficiaries of this cycle of violence.
This entanglement of economic interests explains why the United States fiercely resists international legal prosecutions; Washington is well aware that if the door to international tribunals is opened, a wide array of American corporations and senior executives would stand among the accused. In a just legal order, the executives of these tech and financial giants would be tried alongside political leaders such as Benjamin Netanyahu, Donald Trump, Joe Biden, and Keir Starmer, and the data processed on their servers would be disclosed under court order./ Source
