Artificial intelligence and algorithms have transformed the logic of war and power in West Asia.

At the same time, the concept of “cognitive superiority” has assumed greater importance alongside military superiority. The objective of operations is no longer confined to destroying equipment or seizing positions; altering an adversary’s calculations, weakening social cohesion, managing public opinion, and influencing political processes have also become components of warfare strategy. As a result, the human mind and the mechanisms of political decision-making have themselves become part of the battlefield.
Another significant development is the shift in competition from the production of content to the control of cognitive infrastructure. In the past, psychological operations focused primarily on messaging, propaganda, and the media. Today, however, the training data used by artificial intelligence models, ranking algorithms, search engines, and platform architecture also play a role in determining what information is seen and which narratives become entrenched. Future power, therefore, will not be defined solely by the ability to produce an effective narrative; it will also depend on control over the tools through which narratives are produced, processed, and distributed.

For the countries of West Asia, this transformation means that strategic autonomy can no longer be secured solely through the purchase of weapons or foreign technology. Computing capacity, data infrastructure, indigenous artificial intelligence models, specialized human capital, and the ability to understand and manage the cognitive environment have become new components of national power. The region’s future competition will increasingly revolve around which actor can manage data more effectively, make decisions more rapidly, and exert greater influence over the perceptions and behavior of target audiences. From this perspective, the Iran-U.S. war signals West Asia’s entry into an era in which military, technological, and cognitive power are becoming increasingly integrated.
